NYTimes piece on art in hard times

leave a comment

I thought this was a great read about how art remakes itself in times of economic hardship. For example, the NY Downtown boom happened in a time of deep economic downturn, giving rise to artists such as Basquiat and musical forms such as hip-hop and the short-lived (but influential) no-wave scene. When the old channels of distribution die, artists are innovative enough to come up with new ways to show their art (and no, it’s not all about the internet…sigh).

Ira Glass says: Persist in making crap art

leave a comment

DerryGodo over at em411.com posted this video of Ira Glass explaining his long formative process as an artist. Essentially, he says, as a young artist, you will make stuff you know is not up to snuff. But the important thing is to persist, and you will get better. Finding one’s voice takes time.

The more I think about this clip, the more I like it. Being an artist is nearly 95% persistence and survival. So take heart, make crap. You will only get better if you persist.
