Adventures of a Shoegaze Cellist

Upcoming Shows + a Bonus for Astoria CD buyers

leave a comment

I’m going to be playing some live shows in November and January. I don’t play out very often (my last show was in October of 2009), so if you’ve ever wanted to see my brand of live cello improvisation, here’s your chance.

November 15: I’ll be opening up for the inimitable Clem Leek and Marcus Fischer at the Piano Fort, which is a nifty venue in the back of the Modcott Piano Restoration company. The stage is built on six grand pianos! It should be a great show. Please come by and say hi! It’s a school night, yes, but the show starts early at 7:30, so you should be out of there by 10:30.

Details:
Clem Leek, Marcus Fischer, The OO-Ray
The Piano Fort
1715 SE Spokane, Portland OR
November 15, 7:30 PM, $7

January 6: I’ll be opening up for Andrew Weather’s drone trio known as Parties. More details soon.

As an added bonus for buyers of the Astoria CD, I will be making the live recording of the November show free! There are still copies available, so if you’ve been on the edge about buying it, hopefully this’ll entice you.

The OO-Ray featured in Textura’s Spotlight Series!

leave a comment

The kindly folks at Textura have made me part of their Spotlight series, talking about my sordid history with the Saxaphone and improv as well as my favorite composers, some pithy quotes from other musicians, and why I think being an Amateur is great. I was profiled along with itsnotyouitsme, Christina Vantzou, and Sense.

Migration – TOTM 10-2011

leave a comment

Back with another track in my somewhat sporadic Track of the Month selection (I should probably change the name of the project at this point). This track is a meditation on migrating birds.

Quote of the Day: Brian Eno

leave a comment

Most people don’t realize that new ideas are clumsy. They’re clumsy, awkward, and covered in blood. They need a little time to grow; and they need to be protected while they’re growing.
- Brian Eno

This quote is from the interview in Tape Op 85. Well worth reading.

Quote of the Day: Morton Feldman

In music when you do something new, something original, you’re an amateur. Your imitators – these are the professionals. – Morton Feldman, “The Anxiety of Art”

The book this comes from, Feldman’s “Give My Regards to Eighth Street,” is well worth reading.

Astoria is not free, guys…

leave a comment

I really hate to be a bitch and complain about this, but I have noticed that MP3s of Astoria have been made available on various file sharing websites such as Mediafire and Uploaded.to.

Making an album like this is not free. Even not counting my own personal time put into this album, I have to pay Mastering fees, and manufacturing fees. Even at the price I am charging for the CDs, I am not going to completely recoup my costs. It’s my hope to make the Waveguide Audio netlabel self-sustaining and professional, and freeloaders basically ruin the possibility of me releasing music from myself and others in the future.

If you have downloaded Astoria for free and enjoyed it, please consider either purchasing the CD, or tossing a few bucks my way via the Donate button in the sidebar. Thank you.

And much thanks for those who have purchased my CD. You will receive some wonderful bonus audio goodies in the future. More about that later.
