Please join us at Ella Street Social Club for a lovely night of winter drones to herald the new year.

The OO-Ray (Ted Laderas) will open up with his signature shoegazer cello, which utilizes looping, pitchshifting, and distortion to produce symphonic drones to get lost in.

Next are the delicate sonics of Unrecognizable Now (Marcus Fischer and Matt Jones), who utilize a battery of instruments such as glockenspiel, guitars, tuning forks, music boxes and field recordings in order to build towering sonic cathedrals brick by brick.

Finally, Parties is a supergroup that hails from California, Texas, and Virginia that have come together to produce a joyful roar. Featuring the talents of Joe Morgan (The Late Virginia Summers), P.D. Wilder (Hotel Hotel & More States), and Andrew Weathers.

Each of these acts are a unique electroacoustic talent and should not be missed.

Event is Free, but donations are suggested.

Just in time for the new year, I’ve taken part in Marc Weidenbaum’s Instagr/am/bient compilation by contributing both an image (above) and a track called “Silhouettes”, inspired by Naoyuki Sasanami’s photo below. The idea behind the Instagr/am/bient project first came up from a twitter conversation Marc and I had about how Instagram images look a lot like album covers, and that he’d really like to hear the album that went with the photo above. Quickly enough, he put the idea out there, and here we are.

 The OO-Ray: “Silhouettes” by disquiet

This photo, with its silhouettes and shadows, inspired me to use more discrete transformations such as digital editing and pitch shifting in my piece. The main phrase in the piece is a digitally edited and pitch shifted piano figure, highlighted with several cello tracks treated with a mixture of overdrive and reverberation. Looking at the photo reminds me of those moments right after waking where everything is out of focus and reality snaps into place after a second. I tried to recreate an extended recreation of that transition from dream state to reality, when sunlight floods the room and the day starts anew.

INSTAGR/AM/BIENT: 25 Sonic Postcards by disquiet

A full stream of the project is above, and a PDF document showing all of the photos is available from the dedicated website. Please enjoy!

I’m going to be playing some live shows in November and January. I don’t play out very often (my last show was in October of 2009), so if you’ve ever wanted to see my brand of live cello improvisation, here’s your chance.

November 15: I’ll be opening up for the inimitable Clem Leek and Marcus Fischer at the Piano Fort, which is a nifty venue in the back of the Modcott Piano Restoration company. The stage is built on six grand pianos! It should be a great show. Please come by and say hi! It’s a school night, yes, but the show starts early at 7:30, so you should be out of there by 10:30.

Details:
Clem Leek, Marcus Fischer, The OO-Ray
The Piano Fort
1715 SE Spokane, Portland OR
November 15, 7:30 PM, $7

January 6: I’ll be opening up for Andrew Weather’s drone trio known as Parties. More details soon.

As an added bonus for buyers of the Astoria CD, I will be making the live recording of the November show free! There are still copies available, so if you’ve been on the edge about buying it, hopefully this’ll entice you.
