Gending Erhu

I’ve been reading lots about the Gamelan lately, and I stumbled upon the American Gamelan Institute, which has posted this incredible piece performed by Gamelan Pacifica and Warren Chang called Gending Erhu. It features the absolutely beautiful sound of the the Erhu, or chinese violin, which is fast becoming one of my favorite instruments. [...]

Liveset @ WTF

Had a great time playing @ Fez for sclr’s WTF monthly last night!
This is a live mix recorded direct into ableton for those who wanted a better sounding live set…I messed with the levels a little to get everything to sound consistent and cut out a lot of the silence inbetween so it wouldn’t get [...]

Still Feelings Photos

UltraPDX posted some pics and some nice commentary about the “Still Feelings in Still Times” performance here: Theater in the Theater but not in the Theater.
I’m not to be seen (I was at the very end of the line outside), but nice to see that someone enjoyed the performance.

Clara Rockmore Theremin Videos

Clara Rockmore was a virtuoso of that eerie sounding electronic instrument, the theremin, that is controlled by your hand shape interfering with two radio fields (for more info, definitely check out Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey).
My Cello teacher sent these on to me this morning. These videos are just plain amazing to watch.
Clara plays [...]

Whoo, busy weekend

Got back a couple hours ago from participating in a Liminal Group performance called “Still Feelings in Still Times”. This was a performance/installation piece as part of the Portland Center Stage Just Add Water (JAW) Festival.
Basically, the focus of the project was stillness. About 20 actors and 10 or so musicians were [...]

Apotheke Vid

Thanks to everyone who came to the show last night! It was great to meet lprof (ross), Candlelight (Jim), and cubestar, as well as reconnect with other peeps. Everyone did a smash up job last night, especially lprof, considering it was his first solo electronic show!
Here’s a lil’ youtube bit from last night. Sorry for [...]

Apotheke this Friday

I would just like to remind you that I’ll be playing this friday at Apotheke. Apotheke has all sort of crazy beers and also their infamous belgian frites, which are fried in duck fat for maximum tastiness.
If you’re in the mood to see improvised shoegazer cello (basically live looped cello with distortion and electronics), [...]

The Wind

I just love this commercial…it’s sad and funny at the same time:

Shoegazer Documentary in the Works

According to Bitchfork, a shoegazer documentary called Beautiful Noise by Eric Green is in the works. Green evidently has interviewed nearly 55 people for his documentary, including the Reids (Jesus and Mary Chain), Kevin Shields, Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), and Alan Moulder (shoegaze engineer/producer extraordinaire). Sounds awesome!
Less interesting are the choices of followers [...]

Cello Aftermath

So I had my first gig with the cello/effects/laptop last night at Ground Kontrol. It was pretty fun, and definitely a learning experience.
My current setup consists of my cello, which has a stringvision pickup run through a preamp/DI (sansamp), plus effects, and into the laptop, where the sound is further processed by some custom [...]
